En dag som denna bjuder på massor med överraskningar. Påtagliga överraskningar som på något sätt alltid finns där men som man alltid lyckas förtränga. Överraskningarna jag pratar om handlar inte om något trevligt som tårta, glass och jordgubbar utan om något mer frustrerande. Datorproblem och främst konverteringsproblem.

Alltid och då menar jag ALLTID när man ska sätta sig ner för att avnjuta fasen produktion så slutar det alltid med att man avvarar sex timmar för att räta ut problem som uppstår när till exempel AVID vägrar och importera vissa filer eller när After Effects mer än gärna strejkar. Jag älskar dom två programmen väldigt mycket även om jag kan tycka att Avid är aningen för begränsat för dagens utveckling av det digitala, interfacet känns för övrigt väldigt mycket 1996. After Effects har jag alltid gillat enda sedan jag satt mig ner i programmet för första gången i våras. Men det är alltid en viss hatkärlek för dom två… Jag blir kallsvettig bara jag tänker på det.

Nu har jag dock kommit lite på vägen och faktiskt lyckats göra klart en första tidig version ev mitt nyhetsinslag. Den saknar fortfarande en vinjett men allt annat finns där och sen ska också speakern läggas på, Viktigt, viktigt eftersom det är den som kommer att binda ihop allt ordentligt. Mitt arbete med det här nyhetsinslaget fortsätter i morgon då jag arbetar hemifrån, vilket i sin tur betyder att jag sitter tillägna 3 timmar av dagen på bussen och därmed kan göra klart inslaget innan det är dags att lägga på speaker på tisdag och förhoppningsvis leverera allt tills på onsdag-torsdag.

Jag vart för övrigt tvungen att anställa mig själv som fotograf idag eftersom jag behövde lite “getto” material och endast utrustad med min mobiltelefon som innehaver en 5 megapixel-kamera filmade jag allt i min stad som faktiskt såg ut som getto… Vilket i runda slängs betyder i stort sett hela staden men riktigt så mycket minne har jag inte eller så mycket tid. Ska jag vara riktigt ärlig så vart jag hyfsat nöjd med resultatet, inte bara ser det okej det ser mycket okej ut. Mest tackvare att allt annat är i skitkvalité (eftersom jag plankat allt från YouTube) och mina mobilbilder smälter in i inslaget i sig.

Det känns som jag kommer allt närmare en mer reformerad version. Förhoppningsvis blir jag klar med allt i morgon så att speakern kan läggas på och sedan är det off till efterproduktionen som i det här fallet innebär “finlir”. Det kommer att ta tid det också om jag känner min petighet rätt… Jävlar alltså, tid jag inte har.

Ah, YouTube. Va? Härligt… Jag kan sitta i timmar varje dag på den sidan. Tillsammans med Google, Wikipedia och IMDb det bästa som hänt internet sedan dess stora offentlighet, någonstans i mitten på nittiotalet. Oftast är det filmer som bringar nostalgi, gamla musikvideos som man kommer ihåg från yngre dar eller bara småroliga klipp med extremt dumma människor som ser ännu dummare ut. Jag kan ju också meddela att mycket av det jag kan om gitarrer och hur man spelar på det instrumentet kommer ifrån YouTube, så det är jag väldigt tacksam över.

Nu är det dock dags för något helt annat. Som jag berättade tidigare så är det skarp verksamhet hos ett företag som gäller under den här veckan och nästa. Jag ska göra något CNN-inspirerat nyhetsinslag i Avid och After Effects till ett event som ett företag har under slutet av september. Deadline är satt till onsdag nästa vecka och igår började förproduktionen som jag beräknar ta fortsatt form under morgondagen också. Idag var det mer eller mindre vilodag med tanke på att jag hade så mycket annat och göra. Well, well… Inslaget ska vara från 45 sekunder långt till 1 minut och innehålla ett reportage om en fängelserymning. Keep in mind, jag har inget original material att ta till, förutom den speaker som jag ska spela in i morgon är det tänkt. Allt i materialväg är antingen skapat av mig, från skratch eller taget från YouTube. Det handlar om allt från övervakningskameror till riktiga nyhetsinslag.

Jobbet i sig är ett viktigt inslag för mig eftersom att göra något riktigt bra med 0 kr i budget slår högre än att göra något som alla har beräknat ska vara bra för kanske 50.000 kr. Det här är liksom “Proof of Life” för mig, även om jag gjorde en liknande sak i våras med min Kubrickinspirerade musikvideo. Nu kommer så allt att komma på plats, troligtvis den här helgen. Vinjetten, som jag beräknar tar kortast tid att göra ska “konstrueras” och som vanligt med mig och mina kreationer så tar jag mycket inspiration från andra. Den här gången heter den stora inspirationen faktiskt Rapport. Fram tills för ett par år sedan hade de en jävligt ful vinjett som inte gjorde någon glad. Sen bytte de profil och dagens lila-gul-blå-röd är faktiskt riktigt behaglig och den där jordgloben i början gillar jag skarpt, så skarpt att jag faktiskt “lånade” den lite för min vinjett. De första storyboarden/grafiska profilen jag gjorde gillades skarpt av de ansvariga så jag kommer att göra den så lik som möjligt.

Allt nedtankat material från YouTube är så gott klart och jag väntar bara på speakern som jag ska in och regissera i morgon, manuset jag skrev för den blev i sin all hast just ganska “hastig” men är fullt godkänd för att duga som speaker för ett CNN-inspirerat inslag och hon som ska läsa upp den är fantastisk på engelska så jag har verkligen tur.

Förhoppningsvis kan jag börja med produktionen redan i morgon så jag har så mycket tid som möjligt på mig att hinna till första screeningen på onsdag och en ännu tidigare “preview” på måndag.

Fort ska det gå! Jag hatar tempo i den här branschen!

Jag satt och kollade på en dokumentär jag och en klasspolare från min tidigare utbildning gjorde i våras härom dagen. Filmen som tar upp det svåra med att flytta till ett ställe som man inte direkt avgudar och som dessutom försvårar ens vardag med hinder som är höga.

Filmen var ett arbete i dokumentärfilm och hur man gör ett porträtt av någon. Vi hade en och en halv vecka på oss att göra något så och eftersom vi båda inte är huserade i vanliga fall i STHLM så vad i hela fridens namn skulle vi dokumentera om? Tidigare året innan under hösten hade vi på väg till tunnelbanan och bussarna ständigt gått och diskuterat om att det skulle vara roligt och skildra min klasskompis liv i stortstaden och hur pass vilsen han känner sig med sina besvär och hinder. Det var liksom kontraster som inte var normala. Landsbygden möter storstan med en sur eftersmak av äkta norrlänsk… pess… charm.

När så dagen kom tog vi tillfället i akt och presenterade idén och sedan började vi “on the spot” att planera hur filmen skulle se ut. Vi hade helt enkelt förproduktion under en hel tisdag och sedan var det ju bara att börja spela in under onsdagen för att hinna med redigeringen. Jag har alltid varit mån om att planera och framför allt när det kommer till att skapa något visuellt. Man vill gärna underlätta för sig så att man inte sitter där vid redigeringen och har nada att komma med. Den här gången var det extra svårt eftersom vi hade så pass liten tid men det visade sig vara en bra lektion i att dela upp allt i stadier för att inte missa problemen, och så vidare.

Produktionen skedde under två dagar ute vid Ulvsunda i Bromma och sen var det liksom bara att gå hem och sätta sig vid Avid och sen var vi där. Redigering, man måste älska stadiet när man inte vet vad som ska hända. Det är som att gå ut och plocka ved i en snöstorm och sedan komma tillbaks in vid kaminen och inte veta om man har tagit med sig tillräckligt med pinnar för att få igång brasan, för man vill ju inte gå tillbaks ut dit, igen…

Det gick relativit smidigt även om vi var tvungna att lägga till vissa V/Os (Voice Overs) som saknades i intervjun vi gjorde, det värsta av allt är att V/Os lät inte riktigt som de gjorde under intervjun eftersom vi inte använde samma utrustning så det lät bara förskräckligt efteråt. Efter att ha suttit och svettats med Avid under en hel kväll fick vi så filmenjävlen klar för visning dagen därpå. Den första versionen är aningen längre än den andra vi gjorde eftersom vi var tvungna att ta bort de ganska onödiga eftertexterna som ändå innehåller två namn och inget mer intressant. Jag kan ju genast påpeka om att filmens eftertexter endast gjordes för att se hur mitt musikval kunde passa in till de små filmerna som rullar till vänster i bild. Eftersom jag är ett stort fan av John Frusciante och avgudar allt den människan gör med sina händer och hjärna så var valet naturligt, dessutom har låten “Water” ett intro som passade bra till hur jag ville att filmen skulle sluta, tvärt. Som en kniv i mörka oktobernatten, inkilad mellan två revben.

Tyvärr var inte den första versionen speciellt mycket uppskattad mer än att jag fick bra beröm för mitt foto som var… Så här efterhand kanske aningen för “experimentellt”. Jag är ett fan av Kubrick, det har jag sagt förut och precis som Kubrick och andra stora regissörer så är närbild = makt, överskådlighet, detaljer och tillfredsställelse. Dessutom känns scenerna mer påträngande om de är filmade in till nunan. Jag började experimentera med detta redan i en arbetsuppgift tidigare under våren men nu kom det väl till pass.

Sedan resten, sköt jag på måfå. Det är inte lätt och ta ljud samtidigt som man fotar kan jag säga. Så i högerhanden håller jag en mick och i andra en kamera. Så när huvudpersonen går på vägen så är det jag som försöker hålla kameran någorlunda still och rak och samtidigt vara säker på att jag inte tar upp ljud från mina egna fotspår utan hans… Simultanförmågan fick sig en ordentlig omgång. Det fungerade väl helt okej, jag är inte stolt över det jag gjorde men det var och andra sidan inte det jag ville fokusera på i filmen. Vi hade dessutom andra mer storslagna idéer att realisera så kamerafokus var aldrig en proritet.

När så den andra versionen var klar fick vi mer åtdragna miner i och många var till och med chockade över vad de såg. Va? Har han så stora problem? Är det så jävligt? Yes! tänkte jag för mig själv. Precis den reaktionen jag ville få och det håller nog huvudpersonen tillike co-producenten med om. Folk ska haja till, that’s point.

“Under Stilhetens Skugga” är ett intressant försök till skildring av något som kan tyckas vara världens enklaste till något som verkligen inte är det. Kanske kunde ha gjorts bättre med en längre produktionstid men man kan inte få allt, varje gång.

Under Stillhetens Skugga - First Cut Version

I’m not a “camera fanatic”. I’m not interested in making movies that puts the camerawork in focus and the rest outside. I’m not Paul Greengrass (the new inventor of the “shaky handheld” camera in films such as the Bourne installment) and I’m certainly not Stanley Kubrick (the man that invented the use of long lenses in modern cinema with epics such as “Barry Lyndon” and “The Shining”).

What I like about movies is what they tell us and in what way they are telling us. I am a more on the Coen brothers side when it comes to storytelling. Let the simplest thing do all the heavy work so that the story can surface… slowly. That’s storytelling when storytelling at it’s greatest!

In other words; I like movie making because it get you to tell other people your view of the world. As I said in an earlier post, the stories has been the center of my fascination of moviemaking since I was 12 years old. I have written about 30-40 different Synopsis during these alomst 11 years, some of them I actually have managed to have write it down and some don’t.

But the camera is still the ultimate tool to bring the story you are figuring out into a visual meaning. This is when you write on a piece of paper up to the point you’re shooting it and later, editing the whole thing together. When the camera comes in, that’s were the two different mediums collide and what was a text based medium becomes a visual, a far more intriguing medium.

During this day I have been “knee-deep” in After Effects again. This time  I am trying to get a footage look like a Hollywood movie, which is not easy if you don’t have the tools of the trade of course. I like to experiment a lot with colors and noise. It’s funny, and I consider it to be an art form of such. What I do is using a known thechnique of color reduction which is better known as “Bleach Bypass”. Basically you’re setting the saturation (also known as color intensity) in the middle, all the way out the left is full color and all the way to the right makes the video black & white. When you have set it in the middle, add a little touch of a color. What color is decided on what mood you want the scene to be in.

For instance, The Matrix movies uses alot of green. Wich is a natural color used to bring out the futuristic clean look of our world. Green is also a color that makes the picture more crisp, because it enhances all the natural in our surroundings, such as Grass for example.

In a movie like the Coen Brothers “Oh Brother Where Art Thou?” it’s colorsetting has been set on a yellowish look. Just because it’s set in the outskirts of the southern in USA, and yellow is a prominent color over there (with the meadows and the fields in mind). Yellow does also the trick by making the picture warm and enhancing the “oldie” of the film. Does it changes the mood? Well in a way it does. Of course it has to do a lot with how you’re shooting it but the color does much to the pase of the movies, it feels more relaxed, sort of speak.

In the television world this is demonstrated through a lot of series. Most prominently CBS Crime Scene Investigation. They are using colors to add the tone of each series. Green for CSI: Las Vegas, Yellow for CSI: Miami and blue for CSI: New York. Coincidence? No… Blue is a normal color in New York and the police department standard color is blue there. Also, blue is not a natural color per say, it’s more mechanic than organic so the mix makes the series justice in that field. Yellow, I presume is added a lot in Miami to show of the warm climate and adding a lot more tension to what is happening. Green in Las Vegas is probably because the color green mixes wonderfully with dark scenes and in Las Vegas there is a lot of those. The night shift is sort of enhanced by the fact that they are using green and green is as I sad with Matrix a mysterious color that adds a crisp and cold tone.

Then of course, the different color setting is to create a profile for each series so that they are more easier to tell apart, which is one and so forth.

After Effects is funny to work with color because the creating is truly limitless. I can range from every spectrum of millions of colors I have at my disposal and I like it!

I have always had a fondness for writing and planning things. I like to imitate reality in almost everything I do. Particular in one thing, writing.

I have written short stories and synopsis for as long as I can remember. The first real story i wrote were for a movie about a plane that crashes in the Rocky mountains and the only survivors are two meteorologists. Both of the characters hate each others guts but has to work together to stay alive. Does it sound familiar? I don’t remember it quite that much but It could have something to do with that I actually saw Anthony Hopkins and Alec Baldwin in “The Edge” a few days earlier and well, you do the math.

I was somewhere between eleven and twelve when that occured. Since then many of the things I have written is far moore original than my first attempt in “The Plane”. Did I forget to mention that the imaginary movie won for best screenplay and best cinematography in my imaginary Academy Awards ceremony?

Lately, to be more precise; The most recent years, my ability to spawn and spread in the writingarea has grown. I watch everything from documentaries on Discovery Channel to feature films with Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffmann (Pappilion is a wonderful movie!) and somewhere between comes more modern classics like “Star Wars” and “The Matrix” with more… Watching so many movies broads my horizon a lot and the inspirations comes flowing like a river in Venice.

I have just purchased a black file to store my ideas in. Most of them are stories that I haven’t developed to fully blown stories but some of them has got the intention to become real someday. One of the most recent ideas I have written and developed is a documentary about the economy crisis last year in Europe and foremost USA. I have named the project “Echo-Nomics” and along with it I have also created a poster for it, what the details really are about and what the story tells is still something I like to keep for myself, as I know such information could be… Well, let’s just say I want it for myself.

I often start with an idea by testing it on myself, would I go and see it? And if that question comes with an “yes” than let’s go… If I have doubts, the idea becomes nothing more than just an idea in my head and all though I might forget what it was about I could easily hide it and make it come back, but in a different version. Most of the stories varies in genres but I have learned that the easiest genre to actually create and idea is the standard drama, being that it’s so huge and wide you could fit anything and if you have a biopic (short for “biography picture”) in mind, than you got to develop it with the source in mind. The hardest genre is probably comedy, because comedy is like that shirt you wear; YOU might think it’s cool but others may have other opinions.

Humour as a whole is somewhat, very difficult to write, I envy them who actually succeed. Kudos for you!

Does my personal life affects what I write? Of course it does! That’s what I like about writing, you can take in everything from your own life and make it personal. That’s what makes an original story so fascinating, if you have a personal quirk or maybe somewhere you like to go… Then you can easily implement it in the story and continue to write it until the imagination stops. That’s what makes writing so powerful, sky is really the limit and your imagination is really something that does not sink or dissapear.

Cherish it, if you have any fantasy at all!

It all started with a movie called “The Dark Knight”, about a year ago… You take something from the movie (a company for example) and makes it real by creating a website for it. And then you take other things like characters (Harvey Dent for example) or places in the movie and create even another site. And then you announce this in steps, you announce the first web page and then a couple of weeks later you announce the next web page… You see where I am going here?

All though “The Dark Knight” wasn’t the first product to be marketed with a viral campaign a year before it was released, it certainly was the first one that actually turned viral campaign into daily food for Hollywood. The first time I saw a viral site was for the video game “Grand Theft Auto III” back in 2001 and 2002. So the concept is not new per say but has gained alot of fame for it’s effective way of keep the interest alive… Even though you’re not actually doing anything. And making viral websites is much more cheaper than producing trailers after trailers after trailers. So why has it not gained popularity among low budget movies? It should be a hit!

Anyway, as the headline implies… Viral sites is very funny to make. And I have just got home after a busy work day creating one for an event for a company a little longer further down the road. It’s still very secret, so I can’t really tell you what it is about or where it’s located… What I can tell you is that I have created a fake chat and a fony financial newspaper for this event, the point is to make people more curios about the problem they are about to face during this event and so forth… On September 29th this event will take place somewhere in Stockholm, Sweden and after that I will be more than happy to share every detail I have on these websites… But until then, watch this classic viral sites that has spawned many laughs and “ooohaa!” from my face during this year, cheers!

Okay, I got to be honest here. I have a habit… A habit of collecting interests. During my lifetime I’ve had more interests and hobbies than I can count on my fingers. Once upon a time I was a huge sports jock… And I mean HUGE… Call me nerd, I don’t care but it was borderline crazy for me, sports was my everything. Soccer, Basketball, Handball, Ice Hockey and I even tried Football and Baseball, the American-sports-fan I am. I actually watches the Super Bowl every year… Not many Europeans can brag about that…

And then in my life came the music. I have played drums since I was six. Not on real drums but I drummed, on everything from garbage cans, buckets, kitchen fixins and anything rounded and hollow. I have also played bass (The only instrument I actually have taken lesson in by the way) and now it’s on to the guitar. I bought my first guitar a couple of years ago. First I bought an electric but soon figured out that to get the best out of the instrument you should also go acoustic, witch I did and bought an acoustic guitar. For a whole summer vacation I spend (this is no joke) like five hours a day practicing on that guitar until either the strings were full of dirt or my fingertips started to grow mountains and valleys. Out of this and together with my incredible sense of creativity I got through it and consider myself pretty descent in playing and I have started to mix with my own creations such as improvisations, solos (which basically is improv too) and riffs.

One riff I recorded just the other day is something I made out of three simple chords… An “F#m”, a “D” and an “A”. I call it my “Riffin’-D”. At some point when I jam for myself I often think: “Why can’t I be more creative with these things?” and suddenly out of the blue comes that sweet spot.

Whenever my “Riffin’-D” will become somebody’s song or mine, I don’t know. What I can tell you is that, when I jam or making up stuff like this I do take huge inspirations in things I hear during the ordinary days in life. If you listen carefully you can actually hear that “Riffin’-D” sound similar to “Plain White T’s” “Hey Delilah”… Which is no coincidence, it’s the same chords but in an other progression… And with a Distortion pedal (more of that last in this post) and an Electric guitar instead of an acoustic.

My technics varies a lot. But in this riff I use the “Crab-Grab”-technique… Much the same as Mark Knopfler uses when he does his swinging guitar playing, the man does not use picks… Good for him! What the Crab-Grab does is that I use my index finger and thumb and grabs the particular string I’m playing on and when I move up one string instead of using my index finger and thumb I’ll use my middle finger and index finger which means I don’t have to move my hand so much… It’s a marvelous technique to learn, I love to play like this!

The setup I use in this simple riff is my Arctic White Fender Mexican Stratocaster (I have named her “Bonita”, which means beautiful in Spanish and since she’s Mexican and all you can figure out why), through my Zoom G2.1u pedal and again through my Boss Blues Driver Pedal and there you have it…

What settings I used is something I rather keep for myself, I don’t want to spoil to much.

Oh, and by the way… The humming in the background is my pick-ups which is taking up everything else electric like my computer that I’m connected to… This teaches you that standing in a studio would be a better option to record something, But this just for testing so it doesn’t matter that much.

Sitting at work this very casual Thursday, working with Adobe Flash CS3, got me thinking about the amazing capabilities you can do with this program. As you already have seen (hopefully) my intro for this blog is made in Flash. It’s pretty simple but I like the idea that it actually looks like a movie trailer, If you have any imagination at all that is.

In my line of work, the media business. You get in contact with different platforms all the time, every single day. Most of them are from Adobe. Since Adobe bought Macromedia (the original developer of flash) it has become somewhat of a blessing to mix with Photoshop and Illustrator. So where is the unholiness in this you say? The fact that Flash is time consuming and a bit frustrating to take control over, does make it a bit of pain in the a** to handle sometimes. Setting up a certain deadline for a project is almost impossible if you don’t plan everything accordingly and straight fortward. If any thing goes wrong, It goes terribly wrong. And the time you spent on fixing the problem overlaps the amount of time the whole project was suppose to take.

I sat with a banner for a Swedish bingo site in over seven hours (that’s a full workday without my lunch included) just because two buttons wouldn’t work properly. Luckily, Flash is not that demanding in the systemdepartment like Premiere and After Effects is so it does not crash that often. But then again, both Premiere and After Effects has an auto save function and Flash does not so when it do crashes, you’re completely “f**ked”.

I remember when I first learned using Flash. It was in 8th grade and I was invited by a friend to participate in an experiment with this new program that demanded (back then, not now) that you could draw. Well, my friend is a killer drawer and does marvelous things with both Illustrator, Flash and Photoshop. Me? I’m more of the “layouter”. I like to orginize things to make them seem logic, and I do have an in official form of OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) if have to say so myself, so that job suits me very well. Anyway, we sat in his room and tried this program, he knew it very good, I didn’t. When I got home that day though, I knew everything I wanted to know about it.

During the years, I have been developing a serious “hate crush” on Flash. It’s fun and all but as much as I like sitting and design cool looking things, it’s also very frustrating at times with all the programming and the endless use of movie clips and whatnot. It’s a mixed fascination I still to this day uses Flash… And I still planning to do my home for Reverse Vertigo, 100% flash-crafted… *sigh*
